Goodbye Deutschland, Bonjour Suisse

Goodbye Germany, Hello Switzerland: A New Beginning in Switzerland - A review

Introduction

Up until 2017, I traveled a lot for work in the fields of trade fair and exhibition construction, shopfitting, and stage construction. Traveling for work was nothing new to me. I also traveled a lot privately. Born and raised in the small, gray GDR, I had a bucket list of dream destinations with resonant names like Grenoble, Montreux, and Bangkok as a teenager. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1990, I fulfilled my youthful dreams and started exploring the world. 🌍✈️

The Start of a Journey

Traveling has always been a big part of my life. As a child of the GDR, traveling abroad was more of a distant hope than a tangible reality. But after the reunification of Germany, a whole new world of possibilities opened up. Places I only knew from books and movies suddenly became accessible. My travels took me to France, Switzerland, and far-off countries like Thailand. Each place I visited broadened my horizons and fueled my desire for adventure and discovery.

Years went by, and I found my professional niche in trade fair and exhibition construction, allowing me to continue traveling the world. I worked in various countries and met different cultures and people. Despite the many business trips and fulfilling work, something essential was missing in my life. 🌏

A New Chapter

After my divorce in November 2016, I decided to leave Germany and start fresh. The decision wasn't easy, but my then-girlfriend Juliette, who lived in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, supported me in this endeavor. She helped me improve my French, and we decided to stop just visiting each other. Although she always loved coming to Berlin, we decided it was time to move in together. So, in 2017, I moved to Switzerland and closed all doors behind me in Germany.

Preparing for the move was a challenge. A job as a site manager at a well-known event construction company in Switzerland was already waiting for me. In May 2017, the time had come: in three trips, I transported my belongings left after the divorce to Switzerland. It was a mix of nervousness and excitement as I embarked on my new life. πŸššπŸ‡¨πŸ‡

Arriving in Switzerland

Arriving in Switzerland was a defining experience. The beauty of the landscape, the friendliness of the people, and the new culture fascinated me. Neuchâtel, a charming town on the shores of the lake of the same name, became my new home. The first few weeks were marked by getting used to the new surroundings and adapting to the Swiss way of life.

My new job as a site manager turned out to be just as exciting and challenging as I had imagined. Working in event construction gave me the chance to apply my skills and experience while learning new things. I met a dedicated team and quickly made friends. The Swiss work culture, characterized by precision and efficiency, impressed me and motivated me to do my best. πŸ—οΈπŸ‘·‍♂️

Life in Neuchâtel

Neuchâtel is a city rich in history and culture. The medieval old town, with its narrow streets and historic buildings, has a special charm. The city is also known for its vibrant arts scene and festivals that take place throughout the year. There was always something to do and discover, whether it was visiting a museum, walking by the lake, or taking a trip to the surrounding mountains.

Juliette and I enjoyed our life together in Neuchâtel. We explored the city and the region, tried local cuisine, and attended cultural events. Our shared experiences strengthened our relationship and helped me feel at home in the new environment. 🏞️🍷

Challenges and Successes

Of course, there were challenges too. Integrating into a new country is never easy, and there were moments when I missed Germany and my old friends. But the support from Juliette and the positive experiences in my professional and personal life helped me overcome these phases.

My French improved, and I became more fluent. This not only made everyday life easier but also work, as many of my colleagues spoke little German. I learned to appreciate and respect the differences between German and Swiss culture, which helped me integrate better.

Professionally, I was able to celebrate successes in my new position. Projects were completed successfully, and I received positive feedback from clients and supervisors. This recognition reinforced my decision to move to Neuchâtel and start a new chapter in my life. πŸ“ˆπŸ†

New Horizons

Living in Switzerland opened up new horizons for me. The central location of the country made it easy to travel to other European countries. Weekend trips to France, Italy, or Austria became a regular part of our lives. Each trip enriched my experiences and understanding of Europe's diverse cultures.

But it wasn't just the traveling; the nature of Switzerland also fascinated me. The majestic Alps, clear lakes, and idyllic villages offered countless opportunities for outdoor activities. Hiking, skiing, and mountain biking became new hobbies that I pursued with enthusiasm. Nature gave me a new perspective and helped me relieve stress and recharge my energy. πŸ”οΈπŸš΄‍♂️

Looking Back and Forward

Looking back, moving to Switzerland was one of the best decisions of my life. The experiences I've had over the past few years are priceless. I have grown both professionally and personally. The support from Juliette and the openness of the people in Neuchâtel helped me settle in quickly and find a new home.

Leaving Germany was not easy, but it was necessary to embark on a new path. Switzerland has given me the opportunity to fulfill my dreams and live a fulfilling life. I am grateful for the opportunities and support I've received and look forward to the future.

Conclusion

Life is a journey, and sometimes we have to say goodbye to discover something new. My journey from Germany to Switzerland was marked by changes, challenges, and successes. Every step was worth it, and I look back on the past years with pride and satisfaction. Switzerland has become my new home, and I look forward to continuing to experience new adventures and write my story.

So, goodbye Germany, hello Switzerland! πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺπŸ‘‹πŸ‡¨πŸ‡
